Asylum

Ohio Asylum Lawyer

Member of American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA)

Asylum is a form of protection available to foreign nationals who are already present in the United States and are seeking refuge from their native country or state. Regulations require asylum seekers apply within one year of arriving in the U.S. Also, asylum seekers are prohibited from seeking employment authorization for 150 days after filing for asylum. Once asylum is granted to an individual, he or she may use the approval to apply for permanent residency status.

There are no guarantees in the asylum process. It can be long, complex and very stressful for foreign nationals who are new to American society and burdened by the difficulties they left behind in their home countries.

It is extremely important for anyone considering asylum to obtain help from an experienced immigration lawyer. At Philip Eichorn Co., LPA in Cleveland, I can assist you with any matter related to asylum. The first step is to establish that you are qualified to seek asylum because you were persecuted or fear persecution in your home country due to one or more of the following:

  • Race
  • Religion
  • Nationality
  • Membership in a social group
  • Political opinion

Applications are decided on a case-by-case basis. If missed the one-year filing deadline, you may still apply if the conditions in your country have changed so dramatically during the year you now have reason to fear persecution should you return home or there are exceptional circumstances that precluded your meeting the deadline.
